City Carer, Elica, meets Princess Anne

In February 2007, Princess Anne came to meet the carers of Milton Keynes. A lot of people ranged from 10-70 years old look after a relative, acquaintance or even a friend. Elica, aged 10, looks after her father who suffers from muscular atrophy.

We are very proud of her here at Two Mile Ash School, so we interviewed her to gain some understanding of how hard it is to look after someone when you are so young.

Firstly, we asked Elica whether it was hard to look after her dad. “Sometimes it is, because when he asks me to do something when I am watching television I can get annoyed! Also, it can get tiring running about to get things for my dad.” She said. Then we wondered whether she got that warm feeling inside for helping someone else.  She smiled and told us that it was really nice helping her dad do things which he is unable to do.

Of course, we needed to know what muscular atrophy was. She explained that muscular atrophy was when you can’t use your arms or legs.  It was interesting to sit down and have a discussion with Elica about her schoolwork. She admitted that sometimes it was hard to get it done, but she does her homework nearly all the time! We congratulated her as we moved on to the next question. We knew that it was difficult, but did she feel sad about it now and again?

“Well yes, I suppose sometimes it can be hard!” She replied confidently.

The final question was what the bad things were. “Well that’s a hard question but some of them are things like not being able to get a normal house and having trouble going on planes to go overseas.” She said. We thanked her for letting us interview her. She thanked us and said that she enjoyed it! Thank you very much Elica and we are sure that there is a lot in store for you in future!
