As
a school we are trying to convince our children of tomorrow to walk to
school regularly. We have built a new bike shed
to encourage walking and cycling instead of driving and polluting the
atmosphere. Teachers who live locally also walk, although sometimes this is
not possible, due to equipment.
The school is also recycling most paper that
is used. Each class has its own blue box where they are encouraged to
recycle paper instead of throwing it away. However, when interviewed, Nigel
Holt thought that he felt that students were not making the effort. He also
thinks that the awareness of pupils should be raised to encourage them to
recycle. Teachers are also doing their bit to save the planet by recycling
themselves.
Currently, TMA School is not doing enough to
save energy. Lights are always left on, along with the heating and
computers. When questioned, Nigel Holt claimed that students and staff
should be responsible for things like this. The school is thinking about
introducing a system to turn computers off automatically, as well as
introducing monitors for lights, and heating during the summer months. It
has been decided by everyone that a system is needed, and one similar to the
system outlined above would save lots of energy. But, we queried, how can
students save the planet, when they don’t know why they have to?
