Newsday can reveal that MK dons have kept their mouths shut about the exact
reason why the stadium’s ‘design issues’ have pushed it over its original
budget. However, we do know that it includes a requirement to install
bombproof bins. What is madness, is that the bowl itself will cost £44m,
that is two million pounds over its original budget, and the bins alone will
cost tens of thousands of pounds!
It had been hoped that the stadium would be opened by July 13th,
a date that was etched on a giant countdown clock on the side of the main
building, but this seems like a fabled dream as it is now expected to be
complete by the end of July. But with talks still ongoing
about exactly how it will be opened, it would be later on in the year when
it actually does open.
Dons press officer Anthony Herlihy, says that they were talking about having
a match to open the stadium, but once they have decided the event, then they
can concentrate on the actual date.
The amazing facility will house 30,000 fans, although by the new season,
only the bowl will be finished, so it will only house 22,000 of these. It is
Dons Chairman Pete Winkelman who is in charge of the InterMK consortium, who
brought the club to Milton Keynes.
Mr Herlihy adds that they have had to balance their determination not to cut
any corners with their business sense. We feel a 5% increase is in cost is a
realistic outcome and they are proud of what they are doing for Milton
Keynes.
