They also say the demand came out after Youtube and Google failed to insert
a filter into the clips. However Google says they are confident that Youtube
respects the rights of all the copyright holders. On the other hand Viacom
says:
“There is no question that Google and Youtube are continuing to
take the fruit of our efforts without permission.”
But only last month Viacom asked Youtube to take 100,000 unauthorised clips
from comedy central and VH1, which Viacom also own.
Google’s shares have now dropped by 2.6% but they responded by saying:
“We will certainly not let this suit become a distraction.”
Note though that Google paid $1.65bn for Youtube last year; and have been
legally trying to win permission from media companies for output on Youtube.
Youtube still has a soaring population of around 70million users worldwide
and Google will be hoping that this case will end soon with little cash
loss.
Separately, the BBC has sold small clips of their most popular shows to
Youtube in an attempt to increase their popularity. The company will also
get a little share of advertising revenue made by traffic to new Youtube
Channels.
