Blair Leads the World Forward

Just yesterday, Tony Blair, alongside David Miliband- Environment Secretary- revealed their first draft of a new, legally binding Climate Change Bill, which is to become law next year.

Their theory is to decrease CO emissions by at least 26% by 2020-a large reduction in the space of 14 years. It is also designed to reduce CO emissions by 60% or more, by 2050.

Mr Miliband says that at the end of the day he is not worried where the reductions come from, moreover, it is about the public interest and the country’s enthusiasm. The bill is the first to be passed in any country and The MPs believe Britain is leading the way forward.

Some of the amendments of the bill include:

  • The government in office will be given a budget for five years to reduce emissions, to be reported on annually.
  • Greater means of energy efficient sources, both in business and the home.
  • Wise investments in low carbon fuels and technologies i.e.: use solar, wind and hydroelectric power to replace coal and petrol.
  • Any government in office must report annually on their progress.
  • If the governments fail to reach the set targets, they may be punished or even stripped of power over the country.

The other political parties welcomed the new bill, but many want it to stretch further, and therefore suggest additional amendments such as policies on airports having only ‘green’ expansions, and a minimum level of ‘eco friendliness’ for cars.

However, a full Climate Change bill is to be published in the Autumn.
