Trident troubles Tony?

Recently Tony Blair has been under an increased amount of pressure, due to the fact that he thinks the Trident, Britain’s nuclear weapon, needs upgrading This decision has caused him to loose support from his MPs, Greenpeace and the citizens of the United Kingdom.

Already eighty Labour MPs have expressed their unease towards this proposal. However, this has resulted in Blair gaining increased support from Conservative party members. Liberal Democrats want to postpone this decision until 2014, but, it takes so long to build the submarine, that work must be started now, argues the government.

When Iran upgraded their nuclear weapons, the idea of doing the same to Britain’s weapons came to Mr Blair. Many think that Mr Blair is afraid of attack, but who is likely to attack Britain? Iran have denied planning to, and this raises the question of who else would.

Building a new submarine and upgrading the nuclear equipment would cost about 20 billion pounds and 3% of the whole defence budget, and 70 billion pounds through its life. Mr. Blair has said: ‘That the UK needs nuclear weapons in an uncertain world.’

Global warming is an ever occurring issue and building a deathly nuclear weapon certainly wouldn’t help this. The government needs the money to protect the planet – which most believe to be more important, especially the director of Greenpeace, who stated: “nuclear weapons aren’t going to be the answer to anything.”  All the dangerous chemicals created along with the Trident will affect the atmosphere, and will have a huge impact in destroying the ozone layer.
